Safety legislation

Due to the surging popularity of very high wattage, stronger tubes offered by commercial operators, new European legislation was finally introduced to reduce the maximum permitted irradiance of all sunbed equipment. The new permitted maximum is 0.3 Watts per square metre and applies to both commercial and home hire sunbeds. This means there is now no perceivable advantage in using a salon sunbed over a home use type. The output is the same and the tube wattage is also much less relevant. Tanning exposure times remain the same. The new 0.3 compliant tubes work more gradually, with less reddening and produce a wonderful, golden tan. Feedback from our customers is extremely positive and many feel re-assured to know that the sunbed is within the parameters of what is deemed to be a ‘safer product’. As always we strongly advise everyone not to use their sunbed indiscriminately and to follow the guidance both on this website and on the product.

Canopy and double beds
Ultra violet light is a naturally occurring phenomenon without which life would not exist. However, like many things, too much can undoubtedly be harmful and for that reason we would urge our customers not to be complacent.
In line with legislation imposed some time ago on the high street salons we refuse to hire to anybody under the age of eighteen.
In the commercial tanning industry a lot of emphasis is placed on  'safety and qualified staff' who assess and judge a client's skin type and advise exposure times accordingly. We personally feel that, although advising someone not to use a sunbed is harmless, making unqualified judgements on people's skin types and susceptibilities is not really safe practice, unless coming from a certified Doctor or Dermatologist.  For this reason we ask people to read the information further down this page (which was composed between ourselves and our local Trading Standards, who sought professional advice ) to help make your own informed decision.
Our sunbeds are now available with a 'parental lock' system whereby the customer is able to immobilise the sunbed to prevent unauthorised use by a younger child. Please ask for further details at the time of booking,if this is of any interest.

The home hire sunbeds are all designed to run safely from either one or two separate, 13 Amp sockets.
A domestic sunbed draws relatively high current in comparison with other household appliances. For this reason we recommend that all sockets are in perfect working order and recently passed by a qualified electrician.
The sunbed should be plugged directly in to the wall sockets, without the use of extension leads.

If you are considering hiring a vertical sunbed, canopy sunbed or double sunbed, feel free to call Ashgrove Sunbed Hire.Serving in Teesside and Yorkshire including York, Harrogate, Middlesbrough, Stockton, Cleveland, Teesside, Darlington, Ripon, Northallerton and Thirsk.

Tanning bed guidance and instructions

  • People with skin types 1 and 2 should not use sunbeds. They are likely to be disappointed with the results of the exposure, they have higher susceptibility to sunburn, and have a higher risk of developing skin cancer
  • Any person with a large number of nevi (moles), a tendency to freckle, a history of severe sunburn, especially in childhood, or a family history of malignant melanoma should not use a sunbed
  • Any person taking a medicine that is known to be photoactive should not use a sunbed. If in doubt they should seek the advice of a doctor
  • Any person who already has extensive skin 'sunlight' damage, or who has had premalignant or malignant skin lesions, should not use sunbeds
  • Any person who has a skin disease should seek the advice of a doctor before using a sunbed
  • Children must not use sunbeds
  • Pregnant women should not use a sunbed
  • Sunbeds should not be used if perfumes or body lotions or sprays have been applied that day
  • Because the sensitivities of individuals vary greatly, it is advisable to limit the duration of the first session to one-half of a regular session to establish the user's skin response. If following the first session any adverse reaction occurs, further use of the sunbed is not recommended
  • Regular exposure should not exceed two sessions per week with a maximum of 30 sessions per year. An occasional break from the regularity of exposure is advisable
  • With respect to recommendation (above), the manufacturer of the sunbed should supply a schedule of exposure and recommended maximum exposure durations based on the emission characteristics of the sunbed
  • Appropriate protective eyewear should be provided by the manufacturer and should ALWAYS be worn when using a sunbed. Furthermore, it is recommended that contact lenses should be removed before using the sunbed
Skin type 1: very fair. Freckles: usually a lot. Hair: red, sandy. Eyes: blue, grey

Skin type 2: fair. Freckles: sometimes. Hair: blonde to brown. Eyes: blue, green, brown.

Note: Many of our customers tell us their psoriasis and other skin conditions are improved by u.v exposure, which is great news for the individual. However we are strictly unable to advise or recommend any use of sunbeds for medical purposes Only a Doctor or Dermatologist is qualified to comment on such matters, particularly as some conditions can be made worse with exposure to sunlight. Please consult a doctor if in any doubt. Always follow the exposure times recommended by the manufacturer of the sunbed.
